My wife and I shared two wonderful and productive birding trips with Melvin Cruz. We chose Melvin because I read trip reports of other people who had taken multiple trips with him, which attests to their positive experience. One of my main interests is owls having studied them for over 45 years. We saw 9 species of owls on our first trip of which 7 were new to us – we did not specifically look for owls that we had already seen elsewhere. On our second trip we saw several species of owls but were unsuccessful searching for 2 owls that we had not seen. This latter result occurred only because we were beset with rain precipitated by a Caribbean hurricane. So, one cannot fault the results because weather is an unpredictable variable when birding. Melvin Cruz is a superb bird guide. He has excellent hearing, knows bird songs and calls, has excellent local knowledge for specific species, and is adept at spotting shy and reclusive species. Despite not seeing new owls on our second trip, we saw other species that are typically difficult to see (e.g., ocellated crake) or have restricted ranges in Costa Rica (e.g., lance-tailed manikins) that we had hoped to see but did not really expect. Costa Rica is famous for its birds, coffee, and tourist infrastructure. But it is so much more because Ticos are friendly and inviting, the food is good, and forests are beautiful. Thus, for those traveling to Costa Rica, they are rewarded in many ways. Melvin Cruz is a congenial, soft-spoken companion who speaks fluent English, which makes a 2-week birding trip fly. But he is also thoughtful, helpful, and a very safe driver. Therefore, we recommend him as a bird guide without reservation.

One of my wife's hobbies is birdwatching and I enjoy photography. After our retirement that combination led us to plan multiple trips to Costa Rica. In 2023 we chose a two-week tour with a full-time guide and that's when we met Mel. From the very first day we met a guide who was very personable, very energetic, and very knowledgeable. Throughout our trip Mel got us to locations with the best opportunity to seeing a variety of bird species. He is well connected to the network of guides that communicate cooperatively to help locate the birds we were looking for. Mel is a wizard with his spotting scope and his ability to recognize birds by their call got us views and photos of birds we likely would have not seen otherwise. We had such a good experience with Mel during our first trip with him that we adjusted our schedule to match his to plan another two-week trip the following year. Mel helped my wife add over 200 birds to her life list and I got some nice photos. If you are looking for a knowledgeable guide that's a pleasure to travel with, we highly recommend Mel.

"My wife and I have used Mel as a guide on several occasions, often times planning our trip around his availability. We initially hired him for a day, but then extended our trip because of the great experience we had with Mel. He is an awesome guide, knows the area better than anyone, and could not only identify wildlife immediately when spotted, but he knows every bird/animal just by sound. Mel is reliable, punctual, and his personality makes the day fun, and the time fly by. We couldn't recommend Mel more highly, and we look forward to the next time we can use his guiding services in Costa Rica.
